Mumps

Currently, Franklin and Delaware Counties are experiencing a community-wide outbreak of mumps. First declared as an outbreak at The Ohio State University, there are now more than 150  cases in central Ohio. Additionally, the Union County Health Department is currently investigating suspect cases of mumps within Union County. In light of this increase in mumps, the Union County Health Department is urging residents to:

Be up to date on your MMR vaccine
     - 2 doses are recommended for children (one dose at age 12-15 months and a second dose at age 4-6 years)
     - Adults born during or after 1957 should have had one dose
     - Adults born before 1957 are likely considered immune to mumps
     - Adults at higher risk, such as university students, health care personnel, and international traverlers, and persons with potential exposure to a mumps outbreak should have two doses or other proof of immunity to mumps
Stay home when sick
Wash hands frequently
Cover coughs and sneezes

MMR vaccine is available at the Union County Department. If you have any questions about mumps, or to get an MMR vaccination please call us at (937) 642-0801.
