“Love Them. Protect Them. Immunize Them.” Is this year’s theme for National Infant Immunization Week, April 13-19, 2003. Children need over 80% of their vaccinations in the first 24 months of life to protect them against disease, disability, and even death. There have been many innovations in immunizations since the first vaccination was administered by Dr. Edward Jenner over 200 years ago, and more continue to be made. Immunizations are safe and protect our families and community making them one of our most cost-effective public health strategies.
During National Infant Immunization Week, the Union County Health Department
encourages you to make an effort to locate the vaccinations records of
yourself and those people around you that you love. According to the Centers
for Disease Control and Prevention, the following vaccinations are recommended
by age two:
• 1 vaccination against Measles / Mumps / Rubella (MMR)
• 4 vaccinations against Hib (a major cause of spinal meningitis)
• 3 vaccinations against Polio
• 4 vaccinations against Diptheria, Tetanus and Pertussis (DTP)
• 3 vaccinations against Hepatitis B
• 1 vaccination against Varicella (Chickenpox)
The most common side effects from vaccinations include soreness or redness where the shot is given, and a possible low-grade fever. “Parents are recommended to provide Tylenol to their child prior to receiving their immunizations to reduce and eliminate the risk of these side effects” said Michele Weatherbie, Public Health Nurse at the Union County health Department.
The Union County Health Department provides walk-in immunization clinics
at the following times and locations:
• First Thursday of the month: 9:00am – 11:30am

• Third Wednesday of the month: 3:00pm – 6:30pm

Cost per childhood shot is $6.00. A sliding fee scale is also available
and no child will be turned away for inability to pay. For questions regarding
