Prostate Cancer Awareness
Prostate cancer is the most common type of cancer in men. According to the American Cancer Society, approximately 7,800 cases are diagnosed each year in Ohio. The Union County Health Department joins the American Cancer Society in recognizing September as Prostate Cancer Awareness Month.
The prostate is a small gland located above the rectum and below the bladder. Prostate cancer is most likely to develop after age 50. In it’s earliest stage it may produce no symptoms. However, any of the following signs should be reported to your family physician:
 | Difficulty starting or stopping urination |
| Decreased strength of urine stream |
| Dribbling at the end of urination |
| Painful or burning urination |
| Frequent urination, especially at night |
| Blood in the urine |
| An inability to urinate |
| Continuing pain in the lower back, pelvis or upper thighs |
| Painful ejaculation |
As with many types of cancer, early detection and treatment of prostate cancer increases the chance of a cure. Men age 40 and over should have a digital rectal exam every year and those age 50 and over should have a PSA (Prostate-Specific Antigen) blood test as well.
The Union County Health Department can provide the digital exam at their Cancer Screening Clinic. The Cancer Screening Clinic fees are based on family income but no one is turned away due to an inability to pay.
