Women’s Health Day Is Sure To Measure Up

September is Women’s Health Month and Union County will again be marking the occasion with a special one-day event taking place on Friday, September 28. This year’s topic, “Measuring Up: How Advertising Affects Self-Esteem”, gets at the root of how these images impact women’s concept of self, who they should be and what they should look like.

The featured speaker will be Dr. Vickie Rutledge Shields, Women’s Studies Program Director for Bowling Green State University. Dr. Shields has studied the area of media’s influences on women and just released her new book “Measuring Up: How Media Images of Perfect Bodies Impact Upon Gender Identities.”

“It is an issue we are all impacted by in some way or another, just as the generations before us, as well as those to come,” said Susie Knox, RN, Women’s Health Specialist for the Union County Health Department. “This annual event provides women of all ages a chance to take time to focus on their own health, when typically their own health comes last in their role of family care-giver. We have done all we can to make it easier for women to make time to attend, including offering free child care during the event, transportation to and from home, and sponsorships for the cost of lunch if needed,” Knox explained. “We will also have door prizes and a little gift package for each participant to take home, so take this time out for yourself and join us.”

Tickets are $5 to cover the cost of the lunch. The event begins at 11:30 AM and will end at 1 PM and will be at the First Presbyterian Church at 210 W. Fifth Street, Marysville. For information about this event, tickets, or information on women’s health issues, contact Susie Knox, RN, BSN, Women’s Health Specialist for the Union County Health Department at (937) 642-0801, ext. 23 or toll free 1(888) 333-9461. Tickets can also be purchased by stopping by the Union County Health Department at 621 S. Plum Street or 239 West Fifth Street, Marysville.

This year’s program is supported through a small grant from the Ohio Department of Health, Bureau of Health Promotion and Risk Reduction, Women’s Health Section, and the Ohio Area Health Education Center.
